Drobo Apps
Data Robotics announced new applications for their Drobo drives today. Interestingly, the list includes an iTunes server application from Firefly. As an owner of two AppleTVs with over 300Gb of media to manage, this app caught my eye.
Unfortunately, I suspect this will really only be useful if you have the DroboShare add-on that connects your Drobo to your home network. My Drobo is attached to my Mac Pro through Firewire 800. As a result, I currently stream my iTunes library using iTunes running on the Mac itself. I cannot get to my media unless the Mac is on and iTunes is running.
As a result, it doesn’t seem likely that Firefly would give me anything I cannot already do. It would be nice to access my movies and music without leaving my Mac on, but that is not enough for me to consider buying the $200 DroboShare.
