iPad 2 In Hand

The line at the Alderwood Mall Apple Store was about 200 people long when I got there at 3pm. By the time I entered the store a little over 3 hours later, there were another 300 people behind me and I’d become friends with the pleasant old Brit who’d made the trip on the early-morning ferry from Orcas Island and planned to write a book about the iPad on his new iPad.
I’d originally intended to buy just one iPad 2, a new, black 32Gb WiFi model for my wife. But after battling hypothermia for the better part of the afternoon and frankly getting wrapped up in the excitement of it all, when the Apple rep handing out the reservation cards asked me what I was there to get, I left him with two cards in my shivering hands.
The entire transaction took only ten minutes, but I lingered in the store for twenty more just to try and get some feeling back in my feet. My wife ended up with her iPad 2 and the black leather Smart Cover. I left with a white 64Gb WiFi model and a Smart Cover in orange. Proof that the PunchingIN colors came to me honestly, I suppose.
Debra’s iPad is set up now, a painless process, as expected. Mine is still in the box, and will remain so at least until tomorrow morning. My original iPad is refusing to back itself up in iTunes all of a sudden, no doubt verklempt over being put out to pasture. I’m rebooting everything, and will revisit it come morning. More thoughts on the iPad 2 then.
