Pretty much what you’d expect for $45
The room is bare - barren, really - with just a bed, a desk and a TV. The pool is the color of Mountain Dew. And the guests - at least a third of which have cowboy hats - are drunk and yelling at each other as only inebriated people can. But it’s a place to sleep, and after today’s 2 a.m. start, it’s wonderful.
The road into Kingman from Phoenix is wide and smooth, with vast stretches that are arrow straight and pool table flat. A dull drive, to be sure, made hypnotic at night. The sun dipped below the horizon just before 7, with still two hours to go. I leaned on the gas a bit to make better time, but the road signs warning of animal crossings kept me in check. I’m proud to say I didn’t hit the rabbit that darted across the road about halfway into my journey. The MINI doesn’t have cruise control, as I discovered tonight. And its sport suspension means that it rattles like a box of nails on rough pavement. But it also took the off-ramp into Kingman at 70mph, so from where I’m sitting, I think it’s just about perfect.
