Going for a run in my funny shoes

They're not as silly-looking as those rainbow-striped toe socks popular in, well, never, really, if we're honest with ourselves, but they're close.

They're called FiveFingers and are from Vibram. Little more than a sock with a rubber sole, they're designed to flex and give with your foot, producing a more "natural" running experience. Some go all-out and run barefoot to connect with their primitive bipedal running roots, but for those of us afraid of pointy rocks, glass and icky things sticking to our feet, there's FiveFingers.

Barefoot running has had a bit of a resurgence lately, due in no small part to these shoes. I ended up reading about it after doing some research into how best to avoid knee injuries while running. I've had the ACL repaired in both knees, so I'm particularly interested in this topic.

I just got the shoes on Thursday, and am about to give them a try for a mike or so at Bellevue's Downtown Park. Everything I've read says barefoot running reduces the shock on the knee and is good for strengthening the muscles of the foot and lower leg. We'll see. I'll write more later once I've had a chance to give them a whirl.

I can report already that they attract a lot of attention.

I've seen people wearing these in the gym and I'm waiting for someone to drop a weight on their foot. I can see them being comfortable for running, however. With the rubber coating, do they make your feet sweat (more than usual)?

You know, they really don't provide any less protection for the top of your foot than a standard set of running shoes. Not that I'm recommending them for the weight room, mind you. I think a 20lb weight dropped on these versus a pair of Nikes will still hurt like hell.

As for perspiration, I didn't notice it to be any worse than a regular pair of shoes. If anything, the tops are much more open (you can see the mesh in the photo) and let air in quite well.

I should mention that I did not wear any socks. Two reasons. First, because of the individual compartments for each toe, regular socks won't work in these shoes, and I have not bought a pair of toe'd socks that do. Second, I'd read that it's quite popular to not wear socks at all. I didn't experience any rubbing or any other discomfort because I was barefoot, though I did find that the coldness of the ground transmits directly into the sole of your foot in these shoes, so socks might be a good idea in colder weather.
